Oh dear. Have just installed SuperBeam update 4.56A and now, every time I try to print, I get the Windows message: "SuperBeam has stopped working" and the program closes. My OS is Windows Vista. Help.

I cannot immediately replicate this here on my Vista box but will check it out a bit more carefully in the morning (it's bedtime here!). What make and model of printer are you trying to print to?

My printer is a Samsung SCX-4521F which worked fine with the previous version. Fortunately, the release 4.55d program files were still on my back up drive and so I have re-loaded them onto my hard drive. That is now working ok again.

As a further note, the program is also crashing when printing to a) my own Adobe Acrobat print driver and b) with the inbuilt PDF printer driver. Both on Vista SP2. Not tried with a physical printer yet.

I did manage to coax an error message from Superbeam that may help:

------------------------------------------------------------------
%%[ Error: syntaxerror; OffendingCommand: --nostringval-- ]%%

Stack:
/definecolorrendering

%%[ Flushing: rest of job (to end-of-file) will be ignored ]%%
%%[ Warning: PostScript error. No PDF file produced. ] %%

Thanks for this further information. I have had these two reports of printing problems with 120 copies shipped/downloaded. I will have another look today to see if I can identify anything.

Hello - I am also experiencing a programme crash when I try to print both to my HP C6180 printer and to pdf.

Please could you advise.

Is this also with Vista or another version of Windows?

I have just uploaded release 4.56b which may or may not fix this problem - as I cannot replicate it here I cannot tell. As usual, it is available via the Misc > Check Website for Updates option. If it doesn't fix it, please let me know.

Hello Tony - I have downloaded the update and the problem still exists.

The programme instantly closes when OK is selected in the print dialogue.

On re-opening the last file is not loaded - just an empty screen.

Is it possible to re-load the previous version which worked OK so that I can issue information - I require to do this for a live project which is with Building Control?

I've uploaded 4.56 and the same is happening with our 2 versions, one on XP & one on Vista :(

Done as above for now, & everything is working OK with 4.55d

Hi Tony

Again, exactly the same error message :(

As appealed for above, is it possible to try 4.55d please?

This doesn't appear to be an easy problem to solve!

Thanks in anticipation,

Colin

Just so that you all know, I am still trying to make some progress on this one, although as said before it's a bit hard as I can't replicate it here. As my supplier is late delivering a new Windows 7 desktop I went out and bought a Windows 7 laptop this afternoon and everything works fine on it including printing to PDFs using the built-in PDF generation - no physical printer attached yet.

Hi Tony

As there is still no resolution, can I get a copy of 4.55d from somewhere? (I updated my license a few weeks too late so the first CD I have is the 4.56a version).

Many thanks in anticipation,

Colin

Hi Tony

Sorry to say 4.56c is still crashing on print. Tried for a hour changing fonts, lines, colours, and changing font embedding in the Adobe PDF settings, but no improvement (in fact it crashes even earlier now!).

Thanks for the feedback, even if negative. I just wish I could replicate the problem here. When you say it crashes earlier, can you clarify please.

Have just loaded 4.56/c and am experiencing the same problem with all the latest versions, shut down on trying to print or save to PDF.
I am running XP Professional with a Canon Pixma MP760, surely the latest coding rewrite is at fault.

Yes, there is a problem here that needs resolving, but as I have said before the key problem is that I cannot replicate it here. About 200 copies of the latest versions have been shipped on CD or downloaded and a single digit number of users have experienced problems - which of course is no consolation if you're one of them. Here I now have 2 x XP, 1 x Vista and 2 x Windows 7 computers, Canon MX and Lexmark printers, Adobe and Nitro PDF generators (+ the inbuilt one) and my largest project has 200 beams. Everything here works as it should.

There will be a d release early next week that allows the fonts used for inbuilt PDF generation to be selected separately (rather than the current printer fonts being used) and I have added some extra error trapping to the printing code. But I have not as yet been able to identify what is causing the problem and won't be happy until I have.

Tony - I have now installed v4.56f and this crashes out on printing.

I have also logged the same problem for my ProSteel programme update in the user forum.

I now have to use both applications on older versions.

Please could you advise.

This is currently being worked on. Can you do the following and report back:

1. Go to Configuration, Page Layout. Is the measurement unit in. or cm.?

2. If it is cm. please change it to in. and try printing again. Same problem or OK?

Hi Tony - Thanks for the swift response.

I have changed the configuration to ins and now can print in both ProSteel & SuperBeam.

Thanks, this confirms what I suspected. For anyone else affected, the immediate workaround is to select 'in.' as the dimension in Configuration, Page Layout, changing the actual dimensions if necessary.

A fixed version will be posted over the weekend.

4.56h which fixes the printing bug is now available as a downloadable update. For a full list of changes see http://www.superbeam.co.uk/usersbw.htm#latest
