I have been contacted by a contractor who tells me that the 254x114x37 RSJ section is obsolete, where is the section information from and how can I verify this? I looked on the Corus website but it only has info for UB's and allSCI publications are priced.

The section data is taken from the SCI 'Blue Book'. You can also access this on the Corus website at http://csbluebook.steel-sci.org/Support/Entry.htm.

RSJ sections (tapered flanges) are generally considered to be obsolete but are included in the data file for checking purposes - it's not uncommon to have to check an existing beam under changed or additional loads. I would advise against specifying such sections or tapered flange channels for new work. If you are thinking of specifying the newer Advance sections (marked '+' in the Blue book) I would suggest phoning a local steel stockholder to confirm availability.

Thanks for the link, I saw that but was unsure whether to open it as it required a download.

You can use it without a download if you're using Internet Explorer; with Opera (my browser of choice) you are restricted to the download version. I have tried it with Firefox.
