Sorry for this very basic question but I am new to this software and getting my head round it.

I have part of an attic roof load to support on an opening, Catnic have told me the load is 40Kn and the span is 1885mm. I cant use a lintel for this load as it would be too tall, hoping a small beam might do.

I have tried entering the span as above with a w1 load of 40, but the software then tells me I have a total load of 75.4Kn, which has thrown me a little. I assume I am interpetting the instructions wrongly?

any help appreciated

The reason that you're getting a load of 75.4 is that SuperBeam (and ProSteel) ask for UDLs and part UDLs to be entered as kN per metre: your 40 has been multiplied by the span (1.885) to give 75.4.

In your case the load per metre is 40/1.885 or 40/L: you can enter either of these in the W1 load column and the program will calculate it for you, or, if you prefer, enter 21.22.

If you need any more help please come back and ask.
