When entering a variable load the program will not let me enter a start position for W1 other than 0. It reports "Item 1 invalid load position corrected" and also this is not item 1.

I've tried it here and cannot replicate this. The error message you refer to is displayed when you enter a load start position that is larger than the end position. If you forgot to enter the end position before pressing 'Apply', this would also trigger the error. If you're still having problems, any further information would be appreciated.
