End restraints

I've been playing with SB4 demo in a non serious way (nothing life threatening, but just estimating what sort of loads attic beams could have imposed upon them for an L/360 deflection).

My attic beams run the full with of the house and have centre support as well as at the ends.

Given they sit on wall plates and are nailed to those and the rafters, I would be inclined to treat the ends as having lateral restrained, but are free to rotate - and possibly the centre as being fully restrained.

Is there a way in SB4 that I can add restraint conditions?

Many thanks, Tim

Re: End restraints
On the 'Steel' page of the beam edit dialog there's a field labelled 'Effective Length'. You can either enter a fixed dimension (in metres) or an expression using 'L' (beam span) and/or 'D' (member depth). The online help (F1) from this page gives a lot more information on this.

Re: End restraints
Hi Tony,

Sorry - I should have been specific - this is a timber beam (assume C16 at worst, probably more like C24).

Cheers :)

PS - if I can get the hang of this, I am tempted to actually buy a copy - I want to design a workshop and this would be worth the money for sizing the floor joists (which will have cantilever elements).
