Default Bolt top distance on Fin Plate

Could you please explain why when I try to use a 90 x 90 x 8 mm fin plate connection with 2 no M16 bolts at 40 mm vertical centres the calculation cannot be run and the stated reason is

"bolt top distance, e1 (25 mm) is less than 1.25d (20 mm)"

M12 (Smaller bolts) do not have capacity.

Default Re: Bolt top distance on Fin Plate

Hi Bob

Thanks for the report. For fin plate connections designed using the 'Green Book' [SCI P212] - used as the basis for ProSteel connection calcs - the minimum bolt end and edge distances are 2.0d (6.3 p.153) and this is what is checked inside the program. Unfortunately if this check fails, the wrong error message is shown as per your report. This will be fixed in the next release. To make the calculation comply you will need to increase the plate length or reduce the bolt spacing, assuming that your connection geometry allows this.
