Hollow sections - a reminder

When using hollow sections you need to remember that cold formed (CF) and hot finished sections are not the same thing and if you specify such sections you need to emphasise to the contractor that substitution of one for the other without rechecking is not permissible.

Corus make two grades of CF section, Strongbox™ 235 and Hybox™ 355. The former should not be used in structural applications - Steel Construction Institute Advisory Desk note 271 says: "... it is strongly recommended that Strongbox 235 sections should not be used in structural applications; in particular where designs must comply with building regulations and/or design codes".

Corus's HF sections are branded as Celsius™ 355.
